Connections: Fine Arts + STEAM in High School = Future Ready Students
Mary Jo Montgomery, 9-12 Art Instructor, Fox Chapel Area School District
Sarah Stewart Vasquez, Art Instructor, Fox Chapel Area School District
Fine Arts offerings incorporate STEAM skills through problem solving, math, science and technologies and create a fertile ground for students to develop future-ready skills. Breaking down silos to maximize resources, to inspire creativity, and to expand opportunities for high school students to develop STEAM and future-ready skills is a great way to provide a rich foundation for student learning – and it can be challenging to navigate, particularly at the high school level. Join this session to explore and discuss ways that high schools do and/or could work across disciplines to elevate the creative process in the art department and in other disciplines:
STEAM in the World Language Classroom Panel Discussion
Laura Fleischer Proano, HS Spanish Teacher, Highlands School District
Joe Novak, HS Spanish Teacher, Highlands School District
Rachelle Dene Poth, HS Spanish & STEAM Teacher, Riverview School District
Joan Castillo, Pitt MAT Student at Highlands HS
A panel discussion featuring regional World Language educators will highlight ways they integrate STEAM into the World Language classrooms -- building future ready skills and global competence.

- How does or could technology equipment such as laser cutters, 3D printers, or other upcoming technical tools be shared and/or jointly acquired?
- What might newly created courses that combine innovation and technology look like?
- How does your high school integrate STEAM across disciplines?
